Position Description
The Department of Fine Arts of Perimeter College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor in Film & Media Studies. This position offers a dynamic opportunity for an emerging scholar and dedicated educator to join our vibrant community of artists and scholars. This is a teaching-focused position: 80% of the workload is instruction, with service and scholarly and creative activity accounting for 10% each. Perimeter faculty are responsible for providing 27-32 credit hours of instruction per academic year and engaging in service to the department, college, and university. Perimeter College faculty maintain a campus presence, and the successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to early undergraduate teaching and learning, and the ability to thrive in a highly diverse academic setting. The primary responsibilities of this position will include designing and delivering engaging and innovative curriculum in film history and theory, although basic film production processes and supporting students with production interests is also expected. Guiding students through technical skill-building, conceptual exploration, and critical thinking, the successful candidate will foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in departmental meetings, collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, advise and mentor students, and contribute to the broader academic community through scholarship and service activities. The successful candidate’s expertise and passion for film will inspire and empower Perimeter College students to reach their full creative potential. Perimeter College is a multi-campus institution, and the teaching assignment may be on any of the college’s campuses.
Assistant professor:
A minimum of a Masters of Fine Arts ( MFA ) terminal degree or a PhD in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, Film Production, or a closely related field (completed by the anticipated date of appointment) from an accredited institution is required. some college teaching experience, which may include graduate teaching assistant work as an instructor of record, part-time instructor work, or similar experience.
Salary range: $49,082 – $54,082
Associate professor:
A minimum of a Masters of Fine Arts ( MFA ) terminal degree or a PhD in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, Film Production, or a closely related field and must have previously held the rank of associate professor at a comparable institution for a minimum of one academic year. Salary commensurate with experience.
- Preferred Qualifications/ExperienceCollege teaching experience. One year is preferred and can include experience as a teaching assistant at a college or university.
- Experience teaching online and using a distance learning platform.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in high-impact educational practices, scholarship of teaching and learning, building college-to-career linkages, and/or other pedagogical initiatives that enhance student success.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in scholarship in the discipline and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. " Demonstrated experience teaching film history, film theory, or related subjects at the college level. " Familiarity with film production processes and an ability to support students with production interests, though the primary focus will be on history and theory.
- Experience in developing and designing film courses, including innovative approaches to teaching film history and theory.
- Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to teach introductory film history, film theory, or related subjects at the collegiate level in online modality.
- Ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods.
- Ability to create a sense of belonging for a varied student population and facilitate student learning in both the in-person and virtual learning environments.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills (able to maintain appropriate records).
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues to achieve discipline, department, or college goals.
- Ability to teach courses that connect film theory and history to other areas, such as cultural studies, media studies, or digital humanities.
