The American University of Rome (AUR) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in Art History, beginning in Fall 2027.

AUR's BA in Art History combines the critical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches of an American liberal arts education with exceptional opportunities for direct engagement with art, architecture, museums, collections, archives, and cultural institutions throughout Rome.

We seek an accomplished scholar-teacher whose research and teaching will expand the intellectual, methodological, and geographic scope of the Art History program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth and visibility of the program, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, mentorship, and academic citizenship.

We also welcome candidates whose teaching and research build productive connections between Art History and Fine Arts, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture and encouraging collaboration across programs, museums, collections, and other cultural institutions. Candidates should be prepared to teach foundational Art History courses as well as upper-level courses in their areas of expertise.

Located in Rome, AUR offers exceptional opportunities for object-based, site-specific, and experiential teaching through engagement with museums, collections, archives, galleries, monuments, archaeological sites, and contemporary cultural institutions. The successful candidate will be encouraged to integrate these resources into both teaching and research.

Excellent written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an American liberal arts and/or international university environment.
Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across Art History, Fine Arts, and related fields.
