Position Summary:
The Instructor of Trumpet will provide individual instruction to Interlochen Arts Academy trumpet students; coach sectionals for Academy large ensembles such as orchestra, wind symphony, jazz orchestra, and other relevant ensembles; participate in side-by-side rehearsals; actively and collaboratively recruit prospective trumpet students to the Academy (and assist with recruitment for Interlochen Arts Camp as appropriate); teach weekly studio classes; coach or conduct chamber music, brass choir, and/or trumpet ensemble; and teach other courses as assigned. The Instructor of Trumpet will provide student mentorship and advising for aspiring artists in a boarding school setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach private lessons and studio classes to Interlochen Arts Academy trumpet students
- Coach chamber music, Jazz combos, direct brass ensemble and/or trumpet ensemble, and participate in all brass area activities
- Coach brass or trumpet sectionals for orchestra, wind symphony, Jazz Orchestra, and other large ensembles as appropriate
- Participate in side-by-side rehearsals with large ensembles
- When applicable, teach courses in the Music Division as deemed appropriate
- Lead a student advisory section
- Provide appropriate grading, attendance, and evaluations of student progress as required by the Music Division
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration
- Collaborate with other faculty members
- Actively recruit trumpet students in collaboration with faculty, staff, and administration
- Teach the whole student, working collaboratively with other faculty and colleagues
- Assist students with the college application and audition process
- Perform on the faculty chamber music series
- Assist with the assessment and care of school-owned instruments
- Participate in departmental and employee meetings and serve on committees as directed
- Comply with institutional policies and procedures and act as a good steward of institutional finances
- Respect the culture, diversity, and rights of all students, their families, and the community
- Prioritize duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth
- Perform other duties as assigned
Work Environment:
Work is performed at various sites throughout the campus and classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact.
Required Skills and Experience:
Education: Master’s degree in trumpet performance required or commensurate with professional experience.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of significant teaching experience at the college level and/or with high school students.
- Demonstrated excellence as a professional trumpet player, with a record of significant achievement in solo, chamber, jazz, and large ensemble performance.
- Ability to provide high-level private instruction tailored to the individual artistic and technical development of students
- Experience coaching chamber music, directing brass ensemble, directing trumpet ensemble, and leading trumpet or brass sectionals in large ensemble settings
- Strong commitment to teaching the whole student within a boarding school environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively with other brass and music faculty
- Experience mentoring students through auditions, competitions, and the college application process
- Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
- Willingness to participate fully in departmental meetings, faculty performances, recruitment activities, and community life

- Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
