The University of Macau (UM) is seeking an assistant professor in visual communication design to join its faculty in Macao.
The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized research-oriented comprehensive public university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. The Department of Arts and Design of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Visual Communication Design. According to the current plan, a Faculty of Design will be established at the new campus, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees programmes in Visual Communication Design.
Established by a world-class team of designers, artists, and interdisciplinary scholars, our Visual Communication programmes focus on postgraduate education at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, integrating technology, research and design practice. The programmes emphasize: 1. Strong foundations in visual communication design, including graphic design, typography, branding and identity systems, editorial and publication design, information design, and visual communication methodology; 2. Strong research orientation combined with practical, industry-relevant artistic creation; 3. Graduate-level teaching and supervision that support project development, academic communication, and practice-based or thesis-based research. We seek internationally minded faculty with strong design portfolios, graduate teaching ability, and a commitment to mentoring students and contributing to the development of the Faculty of Design.
Qualifications
1. Doctoral degree in Visual Communication Design or a related field (or an equivalent terminal degree with significant professional achievements); 2. A strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in visual communication design practice; 3. Demonstrated teaching experience, with the ability to teach core areas of visual communication design at the postgraduate level and to supervise practice-based and research-based student work; 4. International exposure through study, work, exhibitions, publications, or industry collaboration; 5. Proficiency in English; 6. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is preferred: (i) Typography and visual language; (ii) Editorial, publication, or book design; (iii) Information design and visual communication systems; (iv) Branding and identity systems; (v) Graphic design with strong formal and methodological foundations; (vi) Visual communication theory, history, criticism, or methodology; (vii) Motion graphics or time-based communication grounded in visual communication design; (viii) Design research and practice-based inquiry; 7. Candidates with a strong commitment to graduate education, programme development, and long-term faculty growth will be especially valued.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty subject to the mutual agreement of the both parties.
Remuneration
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12 per cent but is effectively around five per cent to seven per cent after various discretionary exemptions.
