JOB OVERVIEW :
Texas Southern University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the History of the South, to begin in the fall 2026 semester. We are a comprehensive public university committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. We seek a dynamic scholar and dedicated educator who will contribute to our thriving History Department and interdisciplinary programs.
JOB SUMMARY :
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the History of the South and related topics. The standard teaching load is 3/3 courses per semester. The position requires an active and successful research agenda, student advising, and service to the department, college, and university.
Essential Duties Summary
- Teach undergraduate courses in the History of the South, including specialized topics.
- Develop and teach graduate seminars in specialization.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including supervising thesis research.
- Maintain an active, independent, and successful research program in the History of the South or a closely related field.
- Produce peer-reviewed publications and present research at regional and national conferences.
- Pursue external funding opportunities to support scholarly activities.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Engage in outreach activities with local historical societies, archives, and communities.

Education
Required:
Ph.D in History from an accredited institution. ( ABD candidates will be considered but must have the degree in hand by January 1, 2026.
Required Licensing/Certification
None Required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to:
Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
Work Experience
Required:
- Specialization in History of the South (any chronological period or subfield will be considered).
- Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in university-level teaching.
- A promising record of research and scholarship.
Preferred:
- Thematic expertise that complements current faculty strengths.
- Experience teaching U.S. history survey courses.
- Experience or interest in utilizing digital humanities tools in research and teaching
