About the Opportunity
The Department of Art + Design in the College of Arts, Media, and Design invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track Teaching Professor in Design at the rank of Assistant, or Associate, or Full. All classes will be taught at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. We seek an innovative colleague eager to contribute to the growth and creative evolution of the undergraduate and graduate design programs.
This position requires an educator who integrates innovative practice and research into pedagogy, prioritizing technical skill development alongside critical thinking and visual aesthetics. While the primary focus is on computational design, the role also offers opportunities to explore related topics such as critical cartography, environmental justice, sustainability, and science communication, enriching discussions on the intersection of technology, design, and societal impact.
The ideal candidate is an active practitioner and researcher whose work spans diverse media and critically engages with contemporary creative practices. They will contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration and encourage students to consider the ethical, cultural, and environmental dimensions of technology in design.
Responsibilities
The full-time faculty member will teach core courses in computational methods and advanced technologies, with expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data-driven design, algorithmic processes, information design, and data visualization. A full course load with a 1.0 FTE appointment will be three 4-credit courses per semester (6 in total) with the opportunity to teach in the summer (May-August) for extra compensation. The position's standard duties consist of 80% teaching, 10% service and 10% creative practice.
In addition to teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to contribute to the cultural life and function of the program through service commitments on committees, special projects, and student advising and engagement activities. These service roles are determined based on alignments with the candidate's past experiences and profiles in teaching research and creative practice.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a terminal degree in the anticipated focus areas of teaching. Rank as an Assistant, Associate or Full teaching professor will be assessed in consideration of the candidate's previous teaching experience and creative practice and/or research experience.
