VCU LEDstudio is a leader in providing high-quality higher education through a variety of delivery methods, including fully online and hybrid. The unit broadly supports faculty and academic units in their efforts to leverage technology to optimize student learning, and provides strategic leadership in developing, expanding, and enhancing VCU’s online learning programs and energizing the assessment and continuous quality improvement of current and new technology-mediated courses and programs.
VCU Continuing and Professional Education (VCU CPE), in partnership with the colleges and schools at Virginia Commonwealth University, provides and supports quality continuing and professional education and skills training for individual, local, regional, and national impact. VCU Continuing and Professional Education harnesses the power of VCU — including more than 3,300 instructional faculty and adjunct instructors, an academic medical center, and long-standing community relationships — to create the best learning opportunities available to nontraditional adult learners.
Summary: The Interactive Learning Associate will support the development of, AI Literacy Quest, a web-based interactive educational experience designed to build foundational understanding of artificial intelligence and generative AI tools for VCU students and the broader community.
This position will play an active role in the production of a high-impact digital learning experience within a collaborative studio environment. Interactive Learning Associates will contribute to the design, development, and refinement of project components based on their assigned area of expertise.
Associates contribute to tasks such as:
- Designing user interfaces and game environments for the interactive learning experience
- Creating animations, visual assets, or character illustrations
- Developing interactive elements or supporting web-based implementation
- Writing narrative content and contributing to the project’s creative storyline
- Assisting with user experience design and iterative prototyping
- Supporting the development of instructional content aligned with project learning objectives
Work will involve collaboration across instructional design, user experience, visual design, content development, and web-based implementation. The Interactive Learning Associate is expected to work both independently and collaboratively to meet defined project milestones, participate in iterative development cycles informed by user feedback, and uphold professional standards of communication and accountability. This role supports both the creative execution and instructional integrity of the project, ensuring that interactive elements align with established learning objectives and quality expectations.
This is a temporary, part time telework four-month position, with continued employment dependent upon project need, funding availability, and performance. There is required on-campus attendance for scheduled training, meetings, and workgroups, as needed or as directed by supervisor or leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in a related field such as Computer Science, Communication Arts, Mass Communications, Education, Graphic Design, English, or Information Systems
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in team-based environments (academic, professional, or extracurricular)
- Ability to receive and incorporate feedback in an iterative design and development process
- Foundational technical proficiency relevant to interactive digital media development, such as programming fundamentals, web development, visual design tools, animation software, or writing for digital platforms
- Strong time management and organizational skills to meet project deadlines
- Professional reliability, including responsiveness and accountability in a production-based environment
- Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks
- Interest to engage with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and generative AI concepts
- Ability to attend required on-campus meetings and trainings
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience contributing to collaborative creative or technical projects
- Portfolio demonstrating relevant work such as game prototypes, code samples, UX designs, written narratives, visual art, or interactive media
- Experience with one or more of the following:
- Game development platforms or engines
- Web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc)
- UI/UX design tools
- Animation, motion graphics, or digital illustration tools
- Digital illustration or motion graphics
- Experience conducting or participating in user testing, playtesting, or usability research
- Ability to translate complex technical or conceptual ideas into clear, accessible content or interactive experiences
- Demonstrated leadership or coordination experience in collaborative team-based projects
Salary Range: $20/per hour
