The Art & Design program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Shenandoah University is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to join our faculty as an Associate Professor of Art and Design, with the appointment to begin August 16, 2026. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.
The ideal candidate for this position is an outstanding artist/scholar/educator with a demonstrated record of excellence in professional/creative/academic work. They should be a working artist, with a current record of exhibitions and ongoing artistic development. They will also have experience as an arts administrator with gallery experience, and forward-looking vision.
We seek an individual who is deeply committed to supporting excellence across all visual art disciplines in a collaborative manner and who shares SU's values and dedication to building an inclusive, collegial community. Candidates who can further the diversity and excellence of the campus community demonstrated through strength in teaching, research, and service will be strongly considered.
Responsibilities
- Teach courses in relevant areas of Visual Art and Design, including but not limited to: Art History, Graphic and Digital Art, Foundations Studio Courses, and in candidate’s area of expertise.
- Serve as a director for the Art & Design program.
- Recruit, advise, and mentor students in Art & Design.
- Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within SU’s diverse communities, internally and externally.
All faculty at Shenandoah University are expected to contribute to community and university service, including advising, and to remain active scholars/artists in their fields.

Required Qualifications
- MFA or Ph.D. in a visual art-related field including, but not limited to: fine arts, visual arts, design, and art history.
- Minimum of 5 or more years of teaching experience in higher education in an art-related discipline
- Demonstrated excellence in academic leadership and administration in the visual arts, design, and art history.
- Sustained record of significant professional achievement (i.e., regional, national, or international exhibitions; peer-reviewed publications, etc.).
- Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Strong record of service in an academic setting.
- Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and collaboratively with department colleagues in an equitable team environment.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of and understanding of a private university's policies and procedures.
- Experience in gallery management.
- Experience working collaboratively with on-campus and community organizations.
