Laney College
Laney College, in the heart of vibrant, multicultural downtown Oakland, features the cosmopolitan atmosphere and human energy of a big-city university. Laney is adjacent to the Oakland Museum of California, blocks from historic Chinatown and a pleasant stroll from Lake Merritt.

Job Description Summary
Under general supervision of the Vice President of Instruction, the Architecture Instructor teaches course in architectural design, drafting, graphics, and digital design technologies. The instructor should demonstrate strong knowledge of manual drafting as well as contemporary design technologies including CAD, BIM, 3D modeling, rendering and animation, AI assisted design tools, and architectural visualization and presentation techniques.
Teaching schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment.
Instructors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching methods, including the use of current and future technologies to support student learning and career objectives.
Duties & Responsibilities

- Provide lecture and studio instruction in subjects within the discipline such as architectural design, architectural drafting, architectural graphics, and digital design technologies in accordance with established course outlines.
- Instruction may include manual drafting, architectural graphics, perspective drawing, shade and shadow studies, CAD, BIM, 3D modeling, rendering and animation, and architectural visualization and presentation techniques.
- Responsible for teaching a full-time assignment (1.0 FTE ), typically consisting of approximately 15 equated teaching hours per week, including ongoing assessment of student learning, tracking student progress, maintaining required grade and attendance records, and submitting records in accordance with District policies and procedures.
- Develop and update program curriculum, course outlines, studio projects, and instructional materials as needed to reflect current architectural practices and technologies.
- Maintain familiarity with current architectural design technologies and industry practices.
- Develop and maintain relationships with architecture and design professionals to support program advisory board activities and maintain program relevance to industry needs.
- Identify equipment, software, and supply needs of the department and assist with maintaining inventory of equipment and instructional materials used in architecture courses.
- Assess course and program level learning outcomes and develop and implement instructional improvement strategies.
- Inform students via syllabi concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
- Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and instructional records and submit them according to published deadline
- Prepare and evaluate class assignments, design projects, presentations, and examinations and provide timely feedback to students.
- Post and maintain required office hours in accordance with prevailing policies.
- Participate in faculty discussions on curriculum, teaching and learning strategies, and instructional materials.
- Participate on departmental, divisional, and campus committees and assist with the development and revision of courses within the discipline.
The Instructor is also responsible for providing a full professional service week that may include, but is not limited to:
- Teaching, teaching preparation, maintenance of office hours and student advising, and maintenance of student rosters, class records and grade completion in accordance with District policy and procedures.
- Performing departmental duties such as program and curriculum development, evaluation and revision, and selecting appropriate instructional materials, and working with administrators and other faculty to develop a comprehensive pre-collegiate program.
- Participation in professional activities such as departmental and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and participation in the governance structure of the College and District.
- Pursuing professional growth activities to remain current in discipline and teaching methodology.
- Performing professional outreach activities (e.g., working with administrators and other faculty as part of course development and depending on need, by participating in an industry advisory committee for a program, working with inter-segmental education partners, such as high school, adult school and other colleges and industry partners to design and implement effective basic skills curricula and career pathways in the discipline, etc.).
- Performing other related duties assigned by the College.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of any bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and four years of professional experience in architecture, architectural design, or a related field;
OR
2. Possession of any associate degree from an accredited college or university and six years of professional experience in architecture, architectural design, or a closely related field;
OR
1. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach architecture courses. (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).
OR
2. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable as college transcripts, as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications).
3. Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.
Other Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications by submitting official or unofficial transcripts and providing a complete and detailed record of relevant professional work experience in their application materials.
The District will review education and work history to determine whether minimum qualifications are met. Determinations are made in accordance with Title 5 regulations and District procedures. Official transcripts and additional verification of employment will be required upon offer of employment.
If experience is required in lieu of a master’s degree:
For disciplines requiring a degree and professional experience, applicants must clearly describe how their education and work experience meet the stated minimum qualifications.
Equivalency
Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly may apply for equivalency. Equivalency determinations are made through a separate review process in accordance with District procedures.
The Equivalency Committee will consider only those applicants who formally request equivalency consideration by submitting the Completed Equivalency Request Form with their application. Be sure to attach detailed evidence, such as unofficial transcripts and/or other certifications that support the equivalency.

Desirable Qualifications
Professional experience in architecture, architectural design, or related fields.
At least fifteen years of extensive professional and teaching experience in architecture, architectural design, or architectural drafting, including experience teaching at the community college level; and professional experience in architectural practice such as project management, project coordination, or office management.
Demonstrated experience teaching architectural design, drafting, and architectural graphics.
Experience teaching both manual drafting techniques and digital architectural design technologies.
Familiarity with architectural design technologies including CAD, BIM, 3D modeling, rendering and animation, AI assisted design tools, and architectural visualization and presentation techniques.
Experience teaching architectural studio courses that integrate design development, drafting, and presentation.
Experience mentoring and advising students pursuing architecture or design careers or transfer to four-year architecture programs.
Commitment to the community college mission of providing instructional strategies and resources that support the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and members of the professional architecture and design community.
Ability to motivate and support the learning of students with varying academic backgrounds and skill levels.
Knowledge of and commitment to limiting the cost of course materials for students, using online educational resources or other low-cost options.

Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.
Fingerprinting Requirement: As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024.
Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are legally authorized to work in the United States.
All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is legally authorized to work in the United States.
District Policy: A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process. The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.
